Lawrence County in 1850

In beginning the research necessary for the Illinois Bicentennial next year, I decided to take a look at the 1850 census as it relates to Lawrence County as a whole.  Most genealogists know that the 1850 US census is the first one taken wherein names of individuals, ages, occupations and places of birth are provided. But what could it tell us specifically about the county itself? This is what I discovered.

$1,441 was the annual income needed to support these schools

26 producing establishments were recorded but not identified

$46,757 was the value of farm implements and machinery
2,496 horses were counted
74 mules were used in farming
2,295 milk cows provided milk for families

Should any researcher wish to help with this type of research, please contact a member of the Historical Society. If you are a 'number person' and would like to provide us with ratios of the above numbers, feel free.  If you can identify the 13 churches that existed during this period that would be helpful also. Tomorrow we will post more interesting facts about the county in 1850 found in the 1850 census.
