These shoes belonged to Emily Morris aged 96 years old when she died in September 1939. (The obituary published in the county newspaper referred to her as “an aged colored lady,” as was the custom of the time.) The daughter of Solomon Casey, she was born in Bond Township and spent all her life in the vicinity of her birthplace. She was married to William Morris and became the mother of 10 children. She was a regular attendant at her church as long as her health permitted. Upon her death, the funeral services were held at the Pinkstaff AME Church, with burial in the Portee Cemetery. Thanks to Marva Green for this donation.
