Sumner Press Obituaries 1880's to 1920's

Obits from the Sumner Press 

Gladys Mildred Berkshire, little daughter of Charlie and Alice Berkshire, died March 8,1913, age 3 years 7 months, and 4 days.

Elijah Bell, son of Jesse and Hannah Bell was born in Tennessee, October 20, 1829 and married Catherine Moore in 1854.  After her death he married Mariah Musgrove.  He was instrumental in building the oldest Shanghai(?) church and became one of its charter members, then continued his membership in the Bethlehem church.  On his death on February 7, 1915 at age 85 years, 3 months 15 days, he was survived by 2 sons, 4 daughters, 48 grandchildren, and 50 great-children. Burial was at Bell Cemetery.

Abraham Barnes was born in Victor, New York June 17, 1831 and in 1832 he moved with his parents to Girard, PA where he lived and attended school. In 1852 when 21 years of age, he taught school near Springfield, Ohio for about 8 years, and attended several terms of college at Columbus. He was a student under Horace Mann, a well- known educator.  October 2, 1856 he married Amanda P Wiliston, and they moved to Lawrence County in 1863. On October 19, 1875 Amanda died, and in 1877 he remarried, his second wife being Sarah E Rowe. A few years before his death in 1904, he sustained a broken ankle in an accident, and in the winter of 1903, fell during the heavy sleet resulting in a fractured hip. He died in December 1904 of paralysis. Burial was in the Sumner City Cemetery.

John A Barekman was born in Lukin Township April 4, 1851 and died September 30, 1918 at age 67 years of peritonitis. He first married Ollie C Bell who died six years later. His second wife was Margaret Mahalah Wright whom he married on October 27, 1878.  Burial was in Sumner City Cemetery.

Infant son Baird, the son of Dr. A Q and Amanda Baird, died August 21, 1883, five months old.

E M Bache, son of John and Anna Sparks Bache was born in Chauncey on June 24, 1857 and married Olive McCrary on March 10, 1881.  He was a teacher for 20 years and then entered the life as a salesman for the International Harvester Co remaining for 14 years and then took a position with Empire Carbon Works of St Louis.  He was stricken with apoplexy right before he died on Easter morning March 27, 1910 at age 52. 

Amanda Z Shaw was born in Harford County, Maryland in 1836. She moved to Union County Ohio when 8 years of age. On Christmas Eve 1861 she married John Beard and they came to Ill in 1864. She died March 24, 1918 age 82 years.  Burial was in Antioch Cemetery.

Eddie Borden, the son of J W Borden of Russelltown, and about 45 years old, died at Anna Mental Institution where he had been an inmate for 14 years. (Word was received by the Sumner Press on Monday, May 2, 1918)

Elmer Edgar Berry, son of Henry Berry, was a Seamen, Third Class, in the Navy enlisting in 1917.  He was taken ill with spinal meningitis and died in June of 1918. “On account of the character of the disease no formal services were held, the interment being made in Brian cemetery.”

Altabell Roberts, daughter of W E and Lucy A Roberts and granddaughter of John Periott, was born in Lawrence County on December 30, 1893 and married Everett Bennett on January 21, 1915. She died of appendicitis on July 22, 1918 at the age of 24. Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
