Saturday's Comments

Ladies, you missed a great program Oct 7 at the first of the 2nd annual Fall Series of Lunch and Learn Programs sponsored by the Historical Society. Ann Pratt shared the story of the Red Skelton Museum in Vincennes and a delicious catered lunch by Kay Holsher was served.

The next luncheon is Nov 4 and the last one will be Dec 3.  Tickets are $15 each and reservations can be made at Jane's Beauty Salon in Bridgeport, or the Finishing Touch in Lawrenceville.  Checks can be mailed to PO Box 425 Lawrenceville, Il 62439--Lawrence County Historical Society.

Our 2016 calendars are available for sale at the Finishing Touch during regular hours, or at the Museum (only on Mondays). They are $15 each and feature some of the photographs entered in the 2015 photo contest.  There is a limited supply so if you want one for yourself, or to use as a Christmas present you should purchase one now.

Both the calendar sale and the Lunch and Learn programs provide funds for the Historical Society. The purchase of a new furnace was necessary recently and a remodeling project by John White is on-going.  (Donations of any amount are always appreciated.) Stop by the museum to see what we are doing.  WE are ONLY open on MONDAYS currently, but with enough volunteers, we may be able to open other days as well.  The Genealogy Library in Bridgeport is still open 2-4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The new roof is on the doctor's office building in Bridgeport..thanks to a great volunteer, Wally Garber, and the repair of the windows as begun.  Ann Weed, our school marm, has been busy teaching school to Lancaster students and other groups, so if your group would like to experience 'readin', 'riting, and 'rithmentic of yesteryear please contact the Historical Society.  (Wearing of the dunce cap is optional.)

Preparations are being made for the Smithsonian exhibit next fall 2016.  We are looking for partners and sponsors.  There are several opportunities to be involved with this prestigious event. In addition  to terrific advertising for your business, there is the possibility of display boards corresponding with the local aspect of the theme : Water/Ways, being placed in your business.  Contact D Burton or N King at to get involved.  This is not a Historical Society Event, but one that will involve the whole county.

Photo Contest for 2016:  Start taking those photos now of water related pictures in Lawrence County. More details will be posted later.

And lastly, we still have two 2015 regular Society programs for October 26 and November 23 left. If you have attended the last few programs you know the quality of the programs being provided...FREE of charge. To continue to do that we need members paying their dues.  $35 for an individual and $35 for a family.  Send checks to Membership Chairman, Lawrence County Historical Society, PO Box 425 Lawrenceville, Il 62439. (Even if you don't attend the must be reading this blog...and its still free. What do you spend for the daily newspaper?  Aren't we worth a donation in that amount at least.....)
