Alice Abell--Early for her Funeral

You may have heard the saying:  Late to her own funeral”.  This is a case where she was early…..

Alice Abell
Sumner Press
May 17, 1898

Mrs. Dr. Abell, of St. Francisville, died Friday, after a long illness. Her body was brought here Saturday for burial. There was a misunderstanding about the hour for some cause, the people here being told that the hour of the funeral was 1:30 p.m. at the M. E. Church. The body was brought here at 11:30 a.m.

Mrs. Abell was a daughter of John Barcroft, one of Bond Township's most well known citizens and deservedly had very many friends. Her remains were accompanied here by many citizens of St. Francisville. An appropriate funeral discourse was delivered by her pastor Rev. Inman, after which her remains were laid to rest in the Sumner Cemetery. Had it not been for that misunderstanding to the hour, many more people would have attended the funeral.
