Civil War Solders Brumblay and Clubb

Soldiers who enlisted in the Civil War from Lawrence County didn’t just serve in only one company; nor did they all enlist in Illinois.

Pvt George R. Brumblay of Lawrenceville served in Co K, 70th Ill. Inf.  He was elected Captain on 7/25/1862 at the same time that Capt John D. Sage was elected Lt. Col. of the 70th Reg't of Illinois Volunteers.

George R. Brumblay later served as Captain of Co K, 9th Indiana Cavalry, and he is surely the reason why so many soldiers from Lawrence Co served under him in Co K, 9th Ind. Cav.   Brumblay was from Dearborn Co, Indiana, and evidently came to Lawrenceville in time to become a member of Co K, 70 Ill. Inf. in 1862.  The 1863 Federal Draft List of Lawrence Twp, Lawrence Co, Class I, lists George R. Brumblay as a Lawrenceville attorney.

Men from Lawrence Co, Ill. who served under Capt Brumblay in Co K, 9th Ind. Cav. are all listed as being from "Dearborn Co, Indiana" in the Adjutant General Reports of Indiana. These men include 2nd Lt Henry A. Clubb and Privates John M. Adams, James R. Allender, Ozrow Baker, Conrad Baker, Henry A. Clubb, John W. Emmons, Thomas J. Fish, and Thomas D. Shepherd.

Thomas D. Shepherd was a step-son of Daniel Grass and also served in Co K, 70th Ill. Inf., as well as Co K, 11th U.S. Inf.  Ozrow Baker survived the explosion of the steamship "Sultana", without any wounds.  John W. Emmons perished on the "Sultana" on 4/27/1865.  Thomas J. Fish & James R. Allender were veterans of the 11th Missouri Infantry.

Capt Brumblay worked at the Pension Bureau in Washington D.C. for a few years in the late 1880s & early 1890's.  He is buried at Moore's Hill, Dearborn Co, Indiana.
