THE VINCENNES TIMES
We deeply regret that duty required us to perform the melancholy task of announcing the death of a truly good citizen, Mr. William Tewalt. He died at his residence on the afternoon of Thursday last the 31st ult, after a short but severe illness. Mr. Tewalt was born in Winchester, Virginia, and removed to Shaker Prairie while yet a boy, where he resided until he was about 21 years old, when he married Mrs. Shaw, and soon thereafter removed to Russellville, Illinois, where he commenced the mercantile business, in which pursuit he was very prosperous and obtained a competency. He then came to Vincennes, where he has resided for the last three or four years. We were tolerably well acquainted with the deceased, and respected him for his many noble qualities of head and heart. He was honest, liberal and just in all his dealings, which endeared him to all who knew him. His social and civil intercourse with his fellowman, won for him the highest esteem and fullest confidence. Our community has lost an excellent citizen, a kind neighbor and a Christian friend. As a husband and father he was exemplary, kind and indulgent.
Ed Note: Wm Tewalt is listed in the 1860 Census of Russell Twp, 36 yr old merchant from Virginia with a child, - 1 yr old Minerva Shaw, who is evidently the child of his new bride, Mrs. Sarah Shaw.
