Accidents in June 1974

The National Speed Limit was lowered to 55 miles per hour by Richard Nixon in 1974.

Area Youth Killed Over Weekend Fatalities Occur Saturday, Sunday

To area youths were killed in separate accidents over the weekend. The first occurred Saturday 9:15 PM about one and a half miles east of Bridgeport Illinois 250. Killed was Janet Lee Pearson 15, of Lawrenceville. Ms. Pearson was struck accidentally by a vehicle driven by Paul P. Allen, 17, Bridgeport. She was walking with Ms. Gena Ortiz and Janice K. Becks on the highway toward Lawrenceville. Allen sideswiped a car driven by Louise L. Black also of Bridgeport which reportedly was trying to avoid hitting the girls. The Allen and Black cars were en route west and Allen was attempting to pass the Black vehicle when the accident occurred.

The second fatality occurred Sunday about 7:05 PM south of Sumner at the Sumner Road and Beulah Church Road intersection. Killed was Robert Eugene Read, 18, of Sumner. Read was dead at the scene Sunday after he reportedly was attempting a turn at the intersection while operating a motorcycle and was struck by another motorcycle operated by Mark A.  Ulrich, 21, of Sumner. Upon impact Ulrich was thrown approximately 150 feet and Read, 60 feet.

June 20, 1974 Accidents Take Two Lives

Accidents claimed the life of a local man and area woman over the weekend. Killed were Gale Angle, 25, of Bridgeport and Mrs. Hazel J. B. Bledsoe, 30, of Allendale.  

Angle died Saturday evening after his car apparently missed a curve and struck a tree 12 miles South of Vincennes on a County Road. The accident occurred about 4:30 AM Friday but Angle was not discovered until about two hours afterwards. He was admitted to the hospital with head and chest injuries. After his death, Sunday an autopsy was performed to determine if he had died from injuries received in the wreck or from pneumonia which may have set in. The Coroner for the present ruled his death a traffic fatality.

Mrs. Bledsoe was injured in a one truck accident 1 mile north of Mt Carmel on Illinois 1 Saturday at 12:15 PM.  She died seven hours later in Mt Carmel hospital. She was a part-time employee at Gray’s Idlewild Tavern in Bridgeport.
