Lawrence County News June 5, 1958 Jesse Owens Speaker at Rural Graduation
Diplomas to Eighth Grade graduates of Lawrence County rural schools will be presented by Errett Warner, County Superintendent of Schools assisted by Mack Hockman, president of the Rural Teachers’ Association at the Bridgeport Township High School. The speaker will be Jesse Owens, a grandson of slaves, whose sports history has been remembered by many people.
At the 1936 Olympic Games, held in Berlin, Germany, Owens gained international distinction by winning four gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, and broad jump, and running on the victorious relay team, and shattering Adolph Hitler’s philosophy of Aryan supremacy.
Jesse Owens is considered by many as the greatest track and field star of the half-century.
